Join Microsoft and Prosperity 24.7 at an upcoming Jersey seminar that will look at how information overload – infobesity – is impacting the health of our working population and urge local businesses and Government to rethink how they use technology…
How can we get people more engaged, more productive and happier at work? Is technology part of the problem – and could it also be part of the solution? For the first time ever in Jersey Dave Coplin, Chief Envisioning Officer at Microsoft, imagines what might be possible if more organisations and Government embraced the full, empowering potential of technology and encouraged a truly open, collaborative and flexible working culture.

‘Infobesity’ – the over-consumption of information is raising the stress levels of almost half of our office workers according to new research by independent research agency, YouGov.
Jersey based technology innovators Prosperity 24.7 will host a ground-breaking seminar in partnership with Microsoft to address this topic on Monday 8th September at the Pomme D’or Hotel. The event will be led by thought leader and author Dave Coplin, Chief Envisioning Officer for Microsoft. He will speak to the Jersey business community on the urgent need to harness the power of the machine by taking back control and using technology to our advantage.
The seminar follows the findings of YouGov’s research report titled ‘Defying Digital Distraction’. Results conclude that 55% of us often experience information overload, and 58% have checked for work messages in the first 15 minutes of waking up in the morning. 43% of office workers surveyed feel stressed and another 34% feel overwhelmed by the information they encounter at work.
Commentators are calling it a ‘digital deluge’ whereby a haze of information and devices vie for our attention to the point where they are beginning to remove us from the real world. At the same time, business leaders are worrying that they might miss the next big technology trend and fail to realise the true potential of the big data wave.
In this one-off Jersey seminar, Dave Coplin, who is Microsoft’s UK Chief Envisioning Officer, will discuss for the first time in Jersey, the overwhelming fear that ‘the machines are taking over’. He will explore how the rapidly rising volume of information is affecting all aspects of our lives as individuals, as consumers and customers, as workers and in business. He will then explain how we can transform the digital deluge from a problem into an incredible opportunity to redress the balance and reimagine how we live, work and do business.
Dave Coplin, Chief Envisioning Officer of Microsoft UK says:
‘We have a natural tendency to snack on information, which is turning us into a ‘head down’ generation of workers, with our faces constantly buried in technology. We’re gluttons for email, instant messages, videos, and status updates, which although can be valuable, the sheer volume of information clogs up our headspace and impacts our concentration levels. To regain control, individuals and businesses need to rethink how they use technology, break bad habits and change the role it plays in their lives in order to experience its full potential. To do so, we need to learn to use technology differently so that it enhances, rather than constrains, our work and productivity. We need to evolve our working habits and develop new skills so we can think about the things that really matter, and lean on technology to support us with processing information which is what it’s designed to do.’
Chris Clark, event host and CEO of Prosperity 24.7, says:
‘We are incredibly excited to have attracted a speaker of Dave’s calibre to address our local business community. I have had the pleasure of hearing him speak before and his insights have a truly profound effect on people’s lives and the productivity of businesses operating in this digital age. We all need to start thinking more deeply about how we work, the effect it is having on our health and how technology can better support us in achieving the right balance. I believe individuals and businesses in Jersey can survive and thrive in the digital age by changing technology habits to harness information and support productivity. Alongside this, we also need to be learning how and when to switch off. The seminar is open to anyone and will help everyone! Those who attend will leave with the knowledge that you can outsmart the digital deluge.’
