The upskilling advantage: encouraging Jersey’s digital talent

Companies are increasingly recognising that long-term success depends not only on technology or strategy, but on their people. For Prosperity 24/7, investing in talent is a core part of how the business grows, supports clients and contributes to the wider community. At a time when digital skills are in high demand and the pace of change continues to accelerate, the business is focused on creating opportunities for people to build meaningful, long-term careers in technology and strategic business change.

At Prosperity 24/7, we believe in developing careers and building futures, not simply recruiting to fill roles or workforce gaps. This mindset shapes our colleagues’ experience from the outset. We aim to create an environment where people can flourish, realise their aspirations and benefit from a flexible work-life balance. In this fast-paced sector, continual learning is essential if we are to deliver effectively for our clients, so colleagues are encouraged to keep developing their skills throughout their careers.

School leavers, students, graduates and career changers can all find a route that matches their ambitions and stage of development. In a small employment market such as Jersey, helping people visualise a future for themselves on-island is essential if we are to retain local talent.

We have developed meaningful links with local education initiatives to make those routes more visible and spark interest in technology from an early stage. Through partnerships with Digital Jersey, support for the Youth Hackathon and F1 STEM Racing, links to relevant Highlands College courses, participation in Trident work experience, involvement in the IoD Future Leaders Scheme, and presence at careers fairs and secondary school initiatives such as the Beaulieu STEAM Fair, Prosperity 24/7 helps young people connect classroom learning with real-world innovation.

These experiences give students exposure to office life, practical projects and the diverse services the business provides. Just as importantly, they help students build confidence, understand how their skills can be applied and make more informed choices about their future. They also show that careers in technology are broader, more creative and more people-focused than many young people may realise.

Technology remains a male-dominated industry. In 2024, Prosperity 24/7 became the first technology business in Jersey to publish a gender pay gap report, openly benchmarking ourselves against the sector. The results were encouraging, while women make up around a fifth of our workforce, they are well represented in senior roles and pay across the company sits fractionally in their favour. Representation, though, remains the harder challenge which is why we continue to invest in mentorship, training and partnerships to encourage more women and girls into tech.

For people already in employment, Prosperity 24/7 also offers a compelling proposition for career changers and professionals looking for a new direction. Our business spans technical solutions, business solutions, learning and engagement, and strategy and change, creating space for colleagues with different strengths to move into roles where they can apply transferable skills. With the right training and support, those transitions can create new opportunities in a sector where digital capability increasingly depends on a blend of technical knowledge, communication, problem solving and commercial understanding.

We also understand that people perform best when they feel supported both professionally and personally. Professional development, a supportive working environment and a focus on wellbeing all play a role in helping colleagues build confidence as well as capability.

This reflects a broader understanding of what Jersey’s technology sector now requires. The most in-demand skills are no longer limited to deep technical specialisms. Employers need people who can adapt, collaborate and continue learning as tools, client needs and market conditions evolve.

AI, automation, cybersecurity, process improvement, project delivery and change management are increasingly important, but so too are curiosity, resilience and the ability to translate complex ideas into practical outcomes. This balance between technical and human capability is becoming one of the defining features of successful digital careers.

Nowhere is this clearer than with AI itself, which is becoming one of the fastest-growing skills the sector demands. Rather than viewing this shift as a threat, we’ve built for it by creating a new AI Solutions Lab. This gives colleagues a dedicated space to experiment, develop client solutions and turn emerging AI capability into genuine expertise. It reinforces the point that the most future-proof skill of all is agility, supported by the willingness to keep learning.

This focus on opportunity is particularly important in Jersey’s current economic context. Cost of living pressures, especially around housing, can make it harder for young people to picture a viable future in Jersey, even when they would like to build their careers here. If living independently feels financially out of reach, the attraction of studying and then settling elsewhere becomes much stronger.

There is also a question of perception. Jersey offers far more career variety than assumptions sometimes suggest, yet those assumptions still influence decisions. The Children and Young People’s Survey conducted by Statistics Jersey in 2025 highlighted that nearly half of Year 10 and Year 12 students did not see Jersey as a viable place to build a life and career, with more than a third of sixth form students planning to leave for university and not return. By showing that credible futures exist in digital transformation, AI, business change, data, cybersecurity and innovation, employers can help challenge the idea that young people must leave Jersey to find ambitious, future-facing work.

Building a sustainable pipeline of digital talent cannot be achieved by employers, educators or students in isolation. It requires collaboration, visible opportunities and a shared commitment to showing that rewarding careers can be built here. By engaging with schools and colleges, supporting placements and internships, encouraging continuous development and creating clear progression routes, Prosperity 24/7 is contributing to that bigger picture.

As Jersey continues to invest in its digital future, businesses that grow their own talent will have a clear advantage. They will be more resilient, more innovative and better equipped to meet changing client needs. Prosperity 24/7’s approach shows how that can be done in practice: by opening doors early, supporting people consistently and recognising that long-term commitment is what turns potential into progress. In a sector defined by change that commitment to learning, development and opportunity may be one of the most valuable investments an organisation can make.
